Target Audience

This activity is designed for pharmacists with an interest in dyslipidemia and the role of omega-3 fatty acids.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Discuss the prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD), focusing on dyslipidemia and the importance of targeted lipid therapy for improving cardiovascular outcomes
  2. Examine the emerging body of evidence on the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids within the CVD continuum
  3. Evaluate the differences between the available omega-3 fatty acid formulations (ie, prescription vs dietary supplements) in terms of their manufacturing process, purity standards, potency, and FDA regulation
  4. Identify strategies to educate patients on omega-3 fatty acids, and discuss the role of the pharmacist as part of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in implementing such strategies

Program Goal

The goal of this continuing education activity is to provide pharmacists with an overview of the role of omega-3 fatty acids in the management of dyslipidemia. This activity identifies and discusses key studies illustrating the cardiovascular benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, and explores the fundamental differences between prescription and dietary supplement formulations. Also, this activity highlights the unique position of the pharmacist in intervening and education healthcare providers and patients in improving patient outcomes.
